In the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/21st_century\" title=\"21st century\">21st century<\/a>, it refers generally to the capacity for the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biosphere\" title=\"Biosphere\">biosphere<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and human<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civilization\" title=\"Civilization\">civilization<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to coexist. It is also defined as the process of people maintaining change in a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homeostasis\" title=\"Homeostasis\">homeostasis<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>balanced<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biophysical_environment\" title=\"Biophysical environment\">environment<\/a>, in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-:1-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>For many in the field, sustainability is defined through the following interconnected domains or pillars: environment, economic and social,<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>which according to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fritjof_Capra\" title=\"Fritjof Capra\">Fritjof Capra<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>is based on the principles of Systems Thinking. Sub-domains of sustainable development have been considered also: cultural, technological and political.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Paul2014_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Paul2014-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Reframing_social_sustainability_rep_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Reframing_social_sustainability_rep-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>According to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Our_Common_Future\" title=\"Our Common Future\">Our Common Future<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_development\" title=\"Sustainable development\">Sustainable development<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>is defined as development that &#8220;meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>Sustainable development may be the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organizing_principle\" title=\"Organizing principle\">organizing principle<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of sustainability, yet others may view the two terms as paradoxical (i.e., development is inherently unsustainable).<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sustainability can also be defined as a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socio-ecological_system\" title=\"Socio-ecological system\">socio-ecological<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>process characterized by the pursuit of a common ideal.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Dr._Joel_Diemer_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Dr._Joel_Diemer-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template\">[<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published_sources\" title=\"Wikipedia:Verifiability\"><span title=\"The material near this tag may rely on a self-published source. (February 2020)\">self-published source?<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>An ideal is by definition unattainable in a given time and space. However, by persistently and dynamically approaching it, the process results in a sustainable system.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Dr._Joel_Diemer_11-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Dr._Joel_Diemer-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>Many environmentalists and ecologists argue that sustainability is achieved through the balance of species and the resources within their environment. As is typically practiced in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_resource_management\" title=\"Natural resource management\">natural resource management<\/a>, the goal is to maintain this equilibrium, available resources must not be depleted faster than resources are naturally generated.<\/p>\n<p>Modern use of the term sustainability is broad and difficult to define precisely.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Lackey_-_1995_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Lackey_-_1995-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>Originally, sustainability meant making only such use of natural, renewable resources that people can continue to rely on their yields in the long term.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>The concept of sustainability, or Nachhaltigkeit in German, can be traced back to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Carl_von_Carlowitz\" title=\"Hans Carl von Carlowitz\">Hans Carl von Carlowitz<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1645\u20131714), and was applied to forestry.<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Healthy ecosystems and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_environment\" title=\"Natural environment\">environments<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>are necessary to the survival of humans and other<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organisms\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Organisms\">organisms<\/a>. Ways of reducing negative human impact are<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmentally-friendly\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Environmentally-friendly\">environmentally-friendly<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemical_engineering\" title=\"Chemical engineering\">chemical engineering<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_resources_management\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Environmental resources management\">environmental resources management<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_protection\" title=\"Environmental protection\">environmental protection<\/a>. Information is gained from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_computing\" title=\"Green computing\">green computing<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_chemistry\" title=\"Green chemistry\">green chemistry<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth_science\" title=\"Earth science\">earth science<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_science\" title=\"Environmental science\">environmental science<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conservation_biology\" title=\"Conservation biology\">conservation biology<\/a>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecological_economics\" title=\"Ecological economics\">Ecological economics<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>studies the fields of academic research that aim to address human economies and natural ecosystems.<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Moving towards sustainability is also a social challenge that entails<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_law\" title=\"International law\">international<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and national<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law\" title=\"Law\">law<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urban_planning\" title=\"Urban planning\">urban planning<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transport\" title=\"Transport\">transport<\/a>, supply chain management, local and individual<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lifestyle_(sociology)\" title=\"Lifestyle (sociology)\">lifestyles<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethical_consumerism\" title=\"Ethical consumerism\">ethical consumerism<\/a>. Ways of living more sustainably can take many forms from reorganizing living conditions (e.g.,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecovillages\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ecovillages\">ecovillages<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eco-municipalities\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Eco-municipalities\">eco-municipalities<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_cities\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sustainable cities\">sustainable cities<\/a>), reappraising economic sectors (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Permaculture\" title=\"Permaculture\">permaculture<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_building\" title=\"Green building\">green building<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_agriculture\" title=\"Sustainable agriculture\">sustainable agriculture<\/a>), or work practices (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_architecture\" title=\"Sustainable architecture\">sustainable architecture<\/a>), using science to develop new technologies (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_technologies\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Green technologies\">green technologies<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renewable_energy\" title=\"Renewable energy\">renewable energy<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and sustainable<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Generation_IV_reactor\" title=\"Generation IV reactor\">fission<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fusion_power\" title=\"Fusion power\">fusion power<\/a>), or designing systems in a flexible and reversible manner,<sup id=\"cite_ref-tandfonline.com_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-tandfonline.com-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Zhang_2012_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-Zhang_2012-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>and adjusting individual<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lifestyle_(sociology)\" title=\"Lifestyle (sociology)\">lifestyles<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>that conserve natural resources.<sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In sum, &#8220;the term &#8216;sustainability&#8217; should be viewed as humanity&#8217;s target goal of human-ecosystem equilibrium (homeostasis), while &#8216;sustainable development&#8217; refers to the holistic approach and temporal processes that lead us to the end point of sustainability.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainability#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><span>\u00a0<\/span>Despite the increased popularity of the use of the term &#8220;sustainability&#8221;, the possibility that human societies will achieve environmental sustainability has been, and continues to be, questioned\u2014in light of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_degradation\" title=\"Environmental degradation\">environmental degradation<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Climate_change\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Climate change\">climate change<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overconsumption\" title=\"Overconsumption\">overconsumption<\/a>, population growth and societies&#8217;
